So, What's the Problem in the First Place?

The working conditions of domestic workers have been treated badly since the very beginning. As if they don't already struggle with having to maintain a lifestyle because companies they work for do not provide steady income because they are interested in their own profits for themselves, these workers now have to struggle with being treated unfairly whilst working.

The UAE and the Indian government has laws and human rights which ensure that these problems do not happen, but a lot of the times, these workers aren't aware that such rights and laws even exist. This means, they are stuck in a job where they do not think they do anything about the problems that they are facing.

Employers often exploit these worker's lack of education both economically and socially, these include less pay, working over hours and even discrimination against in the form of assault. What's worse is that this issue almost goes unrecognized and these workers are left once again with situations that they cannot come out of and continue to be exploited.

I spoke with Apoorva Kinra, a law student at University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh remotely through Zoom and she explained how bad the situation is.

I did an interview in the rural areas because those are the people who are more prone to not knowing the rights. There was this women I was talking to and she did not even know that something known as ‘court’ even existed, that was so shocking for me because it highlighted how severe the problem Is in some areas and how much attention it needs and how less of it is given right now.

(you can see the full interview here)

I am using this blog to look into the why and how of the situation. Why do these discriminations happen and how can we help to stop it?

We could point fingers and start blaming different people and organizations for why this problem exists, or we could start to collectively work on solving this issue.
